Isochronous analyses (iso=equal, chrone=time) are used in urban planning and geography to determine the even distribution of travel time in an area. The resulting map draws a line including an area which indicates the travel time, here provided with a specific modality profile.

Travel time is used as a cost metric and can be determined for various means of transport. . Isochronous maps can be determined for different means of transport. In simple terms, the output of an isochronous map for traffic shows how far you can get (in distance) from a given starting point, including the time parameter.
